Shepherd Cabin
Adventurous people have "herd" and are "flocking" to rent this rustic cabin perched on a hill in a picturesque orchard and sheep pasture. If you are looking for a unique vacation experience, Round River Farm may be a place to consider. The cabin is sheltered by the cliffs of Sawmill Dome to the east and looks out over the broad Sawmill Creek valley to the west. It is a brief jaunt to the Superior Hiking Trail or a small inland lake. Short drives take you to many of the most beautiful sites on the North Shore: Tettegouche State Park with the Baptism River, High Falls and Shovel Point on Lake Superior; Crosby Manitou State Park with inland hiking through old growth forest; Temperance River State Park with water rushing through rocky gorges into the big lake; and Split Rock Lighthouse, the most visited historic site in Minnesota. The small town of Finland, 2.5 miles away, has a post office, cooperative general store (the oldest one in the state), bait shop, auto shop/gas station and several restaurant/bars. We are 55 minutes from Two Harbors, 60 minutes from Grand Marais, 75 minutes from Ely.
The 16 X 30 foot cabin includes one sleeping room with a double bed, one sleeping room with bunk beds, and a living area that includes a couch, table and chairs and a kitchen with a small refrigerator and propane cooking stove. There is DC solar power for lights and a wood stove for heat. Water comes from the nearby well, pumped by a traditional windmill and carried inside. There is an outhouse in the back garden.
The road to Round River Farm is steep and rocky so some people choose to park their cars at the bottom of the hill and walk to the farm. We can shuttle luggage and supplies to the cabin if necessary.
Chaletini Cottage
Colby and Tremayne's play house has been transformed into the Chaletini along the northeast slope of our farm. Round River Farm lies at the end of a steep and rocky dirt road, and the Chaletini rests in the protective grove of evergreen trees and has a view of the Sawmill Dome cliffs and a small cherry grove. Organic vegetables and fruit grow in the surrounding fields and orchards, and goats and sheep pasture can be seen out the upstairs back door. The location will take your breath away! A short walk through the woods brings you to the tranquil beauty of Kangas Lake or the spectacular scenery of the Superior Hiking Trail. Lake Superior, the Baptism River and numerous state parks are a short drive away.
The two story, teeny chalet is 8' x 8' with a sitting bench, narrow table, and a small counter with sink on the first floor. The upstairs is accessed by a ladder or an upper door and holds a double mattress for sleeping that looks out onto a tiny porch. There is a small DC solar electric system for lighting. Tall folks are warned that the ceiling is quite low in this quaint little building. Enjoy experiencing a little of an alternative "good life" in this private haven tucked in the hills of the North Shore of Lake Superior.
