Paddle for the Planet
This solar & human powered educational trip down the Minnesota section of the Mississippi River in 2010 has begun. Our mission is to
...study and reveal the connections between ourselves, the river and the planet...
We have now traveled 302.5 miles in canoes from Lake Itasca to Aitkin, MN. The
trip itinerary
continues following our Scattergood Friends School
class from Aitkin to St. Cloud, MN, culminating in a
River Rally
where people and boats will join us for the last three days of our trip to St. Paul. Then join us for a
Concert & Celebration May 23rd
and/or
support our trip
in other ways.
May 6th - May 11th Grand Rapids to Aitkin
"...On the first day of our second stretch it was snowing and the wind was blowing. We were supposed to go thirty miles that day, but we ended up only going thirteen because of the cold wet snowy weather. Mary and Sophia could not feel their feet so we had to stop and set up camp very quickly. Colby was a hero in getting the water boiling and we all worked to get the tents up and the sleeping bags out of their sacks. Once we were warmish and dry-ish we had a little lunch, it was actually pretty fun. We talked and laughed, ate and slept the day away..." Paddle For The Planet Report Two

April 27th - May 5th Lake Itasca to Grand Rapids
"...This is our first encounter with society since leaving scattergood on the 24th. Since then we have spent 8 days on the river, paddling through rapids, swamp, culverts, swamp, lakes, swamp, forest, swamp, and swamp. We also paddled through swamp! the weather forecast has remained grim since day 2. Northern Minnesota took us back in time, to the early early spring (winter). The scenery became less and less colorful, the temperature dropped like a rock through the atmosphere, and clouds obscured the sun; harbingers of the thousands of gallons of ice cold water that would fall onto us form the sky above..."
