Paddle for the Planet solar & human powered educational trip down the Mississippi in 2010. The mission is to
...study and reveal the connections between ourselves,
the river and the planet...

We will travel in canoes until the journey enters the locks and dams near the Twin Cities see trip itinery at which time we hope to add a solar-powered boat to aid in our navigation and research abilities. support our trip budget We are planning several celebrations along the river to highlight aspects of our mission and goals. Including the trip leaders and crew, we hope to maintain a balance of ten individuals for the majority of the trip.

GOALS
1) BUILD COMMUNITY along the river banks and within our international crew celebrating each other, the river and the planet
2) CONDUCT RESEARCH on water quality and watershed issues along the full length of the river
3) EDUCATE explore and share the connections between our lifestyles, agriculture, energy, industry and the health of the river, the human communities and the world.

Mississippi River Highlights
1 - The Mississippi is the 4th longest river in the world (3705km)
2 - The Mississippi drains 41% of the continental US, including all or parts of 31 states and 2 Canadian provinces
3 - The Mississippi carries sediment and pollution into the Gulf of Mexico in such high quantities that it creates a "dead zone" in the ocean the size of Massachusetts.
4 - The Mississippi provides one of the major shipping lanes in the US
5 - The Mississippi name came from the Anishinabe people and means "Big River"
