This curriculum was written and put
together by David Abazs, Dave Graf, Kurt Mead and Allison Wood for the Northland Food & Farming
Initiative sponsored by the Sustainable Development Partnership of Northeastern Minnesota to
increase basic food literacy and give consumers a more sophisticated understanding of the
economics of our food system options, health and food quality issues, effects of the food
system on rural communities, and the history of our regional food system. This ten classes
kit was written for farmers and gardeners to take into their local schools and teach.
This approach provides students with a teacher who can share his or her life experience,
bringing a personal touch and passion into the curriculum. The NFFI Sustainable Food Systems
mission is:
"to build awareness of sustainable food and farming issues by
providing hands-on, passsionate, farmer to student curriculum"
The project is being administerd by
Shalom Seed Sanctuary, a 501 (C)(3) non-profit organization which is directed by David & Lise Abazs located at Round River Farm. The curriculum includes all of the classes
you see in yellow on your left. Click on the sample lesson plan to get some insight into what the curriculum offers. Each class runs about 75 minutes,
and has been designed for 5th grade and up. If you are interested in ordering the full curriculum,
